Treatment for sciatica epidural is just one of the many options that you have to choose from, and is definitely one that you will want to discuss with your doctor before going through with it.

What it is

Before you can really understand about treatment for sciatica epidural, you need to be more aware of what sciatica actually is and what is involved with it. Sciatica is pain that is causes from irritation of the sciatic nerve, and which is typically felt from the lower back to behind the thigh. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and begins from nerve roots in the lumbar spinal cord in the lower back. It then extends through the buttocks area and down into the lower limbs.

Treatment

Besides treatment for sciatica epidural, there are many other treatment options that you can choose from as well. Cold packs and hot packs are one of the mildest forms of treatment, and stretching is also often effective. Initially, passive stretching exercise for your lower back will help to relieve the pain and get you feeling better, even if only temporarily.

Over the counter medications are also very popular and this includes pain relievers. These treatments work by reducing pain and inflammation in the affected area and acetaminophen products are also ideal as well here.

Then there is the option of treatment for sciatica epidural, which is one of the more serious and therefore less often recommended treatment options. Treatment for sciatica epidural is very similar to the epidural that is used during childbirth, and works by numbing the pain in the sufferer’s body.

More specifically, epidural injection of medication allows for a precise and concentrated amount of the treatment agents to be deposited and retained. This is particularly ideal because it means that the agents will be released slowly over time, thereby giving the patient a longer relief time than with other methods.

Make sure that you have a proper assessment and diagnosis of your condition done before going ahead with any particular treatment, for one because sciatica is often confused with a variety of other health problems and conditions. Because the symptoms are usually so general and subtle, it is easy to mistake them for symptoms of another condition other than sciatica.

treatment for sciatica

Treatment For Sciatica Can Be Either Non-Surgical Or Surgical

Most often, sciatica pain is caused when the sciatic nerve in a person’s lower back gets trapped, and it is also not wrong to state that this is a very common type of back pain that anyone can suffer from, and it is also caused when the sciatic nerve from a bulging or herniated disc is put under undue pressure. In addition, it is quite normal for sciatic pain to be infrequent at times, while at other times it can be irritating and can even be quite severe enough to become quite debilitating.

Rarely Causes Permanent Damage To Nerve Tissues

However, even though sciatic pain can be very painful as well as uncomfortable, it will rarely result in permanently damaging nerve tissues and there are several treatments for sciatica that can be tried out in order to get relief. In fact, most often treatment for sciatica is much the same as that for treating a slipped disc and common methods of treatment for sciatica include Connective Tissue Manipulation as well as the Mackenzie Exercise Regime that can each lessen the tension close to the spine and also help in changing the mechanics of the disc so that it can return to its natural position and thus not cause any further pain.

There are also non-surgical treatments for sciatica which can prove to be just as effective as surgical treatment for sciatica and among the non-surgical treatments for sciatica you have non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications or NSAIDs, short term narcotic usage when the sciatica pain is acute and giving lumbar injections and even using physical therapy.

Other than when suffering acute sciatica pain, it is recommended that a patient also remains active by simply being up and about for a short time and also for as long as it does not cause any severe pain. Thus, doing light stretching as well as taking to walking and even performing certain aerobics exercises should prove to be helpful whenever you are suffering from sciatica pain.

However, in certain instances of sciatica pain, surgery may be the best treatment for sciatica though such a form of treatment will only become necessary after a person has tried out non-surgical treatment methods for between four and six weeks without any success. In addition, if a MRI scan shows that the patient’s disc is herniated or there is spinal stenosis, then surgery may be the best treatment for sciatica.

Regardless of whether you take surgical or non-surgical treatment for sciatica, recovery will be best achieved if you strictly adhere to your doctor’s instructions and also ensure that you do everything possible to not put any unwanted mechanical stress on your spine.

symptoms of sciatica

Recognizing The Symptoms Of Sciatica

Before you can begin to understand what sciatica is you first must come to understand the symptoms of sciatica.

Sciatica comes in many different forms and while some of the symptoms of sciatica may be repetitive for many of the conditions there are some symptoms of sciatica that are unique to certain conditions.

It is best to outline some of the more common symptoms of sciatica and then maybe touch on some of the other symptoms of sciatica to get a real feel for how the symptoms are to be identified. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms that are listed in this article it is a good idea for you to contact your doctor as soon as possible and get yourself checked out. Sciatica is a condition that affects the nervous system so if any of these symptoms come up have them checked out immediately.

Some of the more common symptoms of sciatica are a reduction in reflex reaction anywhere in your body. You can usually sense this in a knee-jerk reflex reaction test that your doctor can give you. Along with this you may also experience a pain or even a numbness in your leg that can run all the way down to your foot. You will find it difficult to move the leg or foot and raising your leg can become quite painful. These are the common symptoms of sciatica and if you begin to experience these symptoms it is best to contact your doctor or seek medical help immediately.

Some Of The Other Symptoms

Some of the other symptoms of sciatica are a numbing pain in different parts of your leg. Sometimes sciatica will appear in your entire leg, sometimes it may appear in just your upper leg, or even just in your ankle. It has been known to be as specific as the front or the back of the upper leg as well. Many of the symptoms of sciatica can be tricky as they can sometimes mimic one another and confuse you as to exactly where the pain is coming from. This is something your doctor can help you figure out and something that your doctor can also help you work on a course for treatment. Sciatica can even be as specific as to affect the webbing between your toes so be sure to get a professional opinion.

Sciatica is a condition that affects the nerves in the lower portion of your body. This is bad enough and terrible to endure until you find a method of controlling the pain and curing the underlying cause for this condition; however, there are cases where you would find symptoms of bilateral sciatica which means that both the legs would be affected by the condition.

This is a very rare occurrence, but it exists nonetheless and when it happens you would find that you would be pinned down to the bed unable to even turn on your side, leave alone standing on your own or walking about.

Eliminate The Symptoms Of Bilateral Sciatica With Natural Medication

Modern medicine has very little to offer than symptomatic medication and advice to have bed rest for as long as it takes for the inflammation of the sciatic nerve to subside. Fortunately, there are a number of natural remedies that can eliminate the majority if not all the symptoms of bilateral sciatica, most of these simple enough to make it yourself at home with the least of effort.

If you love drinking tea or juice, you could use the juice of potato and celery for this purpose in 1:1 ratio. Beware that though this is a very potent natural cure for the symptoms of bilateral sciatica, the taste is horrible and you would need to drink about 10 ounces every day in order to benefit from this method. You could improve its taste by adding equal measures of beet root and carrot.

If you prefer tea, you could have celery tea that is excellent in fighting the sciatica pain or elderberry tea. Both these herbs have muscle relaxant properties which help a great deal in controlling the sciatica pain.

Garlic, ginger and turmeric are three herbs that are well known for their anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. You could have these herbs in raw form (separately), ground into paste or as health supplements wherever applicable. When taking garlic for fighting the symptoms of bilateral sciatica, remember to complement it with VitaminsB1, B6 and B complex for best results. You could also use milk as a base in case you cannot have it any other way – have a glass of turmeric milk, ginger milk or garlic milk two-three times a days for optimal results.

For topical applications you could use a paste of horseradish which when rubbed on the places where you feel pain brings almost instant relief.

sciatica yoga

Sciatica Yoga Can Ease And Even Cure This Ailment

Sciatica is a very painful condition which is caused by a number of reasons such as inflammation of the sciatic nerve, the formation of a tumor, herniated disk, spinal stenosis, nerve root compression, piriformis and even new bone formation among others. The pain would radiate from mid buttock to the heel completely arresting any movement of the leg.

How Good Is Sciatica Yoga Against The Pain?

Yoga is an excellent exercise regime that is touted to be able to fight any and all the possible ailments that affect a human being. There is only one condition to the effectiveness of this method and that is you need to consult a mater or certified practitioner before applying it for your condition.

This is especially important with sciatica yoga because in this case the reason for the pain could be back injury as well that could get aggravated with the yogic postures if the condition would be misdiagnosed. In order to rule out this possibility that could end in devastating results, you would need to consult with a doctor first so you would know for sure the cause of the pain and only when back problems would be ruled out should you consider to take up sciatica yoga.

One Example Of Sciatica Yoga That Anyone Can Do At Home

As soon as you get your doctor's confirmation that the pain you are experiencing is not caused by back or spinal chord injury you could visit a yoga master and learn the required posture to help you control your pain and even cure your sciatica. One such exercise which is extremely effective in reducing the pain is as follows:

Lie on your back on the floor with you legs (the calves) resting on the seat of a regular chair. Ensure that your hips (vis-à-vis the floor) and the bend of the knees vis-à-vis the chair are at an angle of 90 degrees. Have your arms crossed over your chest with your hands (palms down) touching the extreme ends of your shoulders. Inhale air to fill your lungs completely and then leave the air out very slowly.

As you exhale the air, lower your back to the floor and pull up your shoulders off the floor as far as you can (ideally 6-10 inches). Hold the posture for ten seconds and then lower each shoulder alternatively to touch the floor before regaining your original position. Repeat the exercise about six to eight times every day until you feel the pain is gone.

There are many other sciatica yoga exercises that you could learn from your yoga master that would be very helpful, provided you are willing to do it regularly for about 15-20 minutes.

sciatica treatment

When To Get Sciatica Treatment

Many of us have experienced sciatica at one time or another. Sciatica symptoms may sometimes indicate more serious medical conditions, so it is crucial to know when to get treatment for sciatica.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica, generally speaking, is the inflammation or irritation of the largest nerve in the human body: the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and extends downward through the buttock, around the thigh, down the leg and into the foot.

Sciatica usually presents as a deep, severe pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve: originating in the lower back, extending through the buttock and down into the leg.

When Is Sciatica Treatment Necessary?

If you are experiencing sciatica pain following an accident or traumatic injury, you should get medical treatment for your sciatica as soon as possible to rule out other more serious conditions. Moreover, you should consult your doctor if you have cancer or HIV and you experience sciatica symptoms.

That said, sciatica will often resolve itself over time, especially with bed rest. Patients who stop doing most of their physical activities and stay in bed report seeing improvement in their sciatica symptoms within a few days.

Physical movements affect the severity of sciatica symptoms, so many patients will experience relief by shifting positions or by not attempting an activity that exacerbates the condition, like walking down stairs or sitting a certain way.

What Sciatica Treatment Is Available?

Patients who suffer from severe, chronic sciatica may need to have surgery. However, this is a drastic treatment, and most patients try more conservative remedies before they opt for surgery.

In states where it is available, medical cannabis, or medical marijuana, has proven effective in the treatment of sciatica pain. Use of medical marijuana is prohibited by federal law, but several states have chosen to make this pain-relieving drug legal for patients who suffer from certain conditions, sciatica among them.

Other patients have reported getting relief from their sciatica symptoms through hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapists use special relaxation techniques to put the patient in a suggestible state of being; then they provide a focal point for the patient to concentrate on when the patient feels pain. Focusing repeatedly on the focal point helps relieve the sciatica pain.

Patients who are able to be physically active have found exercise to be helpful in managing their sciatica. In particular, exercises that strengthen the body's core, improve the posture, and work the muscles that support the spine are thought to help in the treatment of sciatica.

sciatica therapy

Some Different Types Of Sciatica Therapy To Provide Relief From Sciatic Pain

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body that begins at the pelvis and continues through to your hip area and buttocks and then down each leg and it is also responsible for controlling a number of muscles in the lower legs and it also provides feelings to legs, thighs and also the feet. Anybody that suffers from sciatic pain will feel different degrees of pain that can either be infrequent or debilitating and though the pain may eventually subside on its own, it would still require many weeks before it resolves itself without outside help.

Magnetic Therapy

To hasten the recovery and relief process, you can try out different types of sciatica therapy that will help reduce the sciatica symptoms, and one possible sciatica therapy that can be used to good effect is magnetic therapy in which the magnets need to be placed close to where you are feeling the pain, which in most cases would the lower region of your back.

Physical therapy is no doubt the best sciatica therapy as it is very helpful in the recovery process, and you can even try another alternative solution such as taking a whirlpool spa that can prove helpful in massaging the injured tissues while at the same time not causing any unwanted strain, and which also allows you to enjoy the benefits of being soaked up in a hot bath for even as few as ten minutes each day, which is all you need to get much needed relief. The whirlpool spa is a very good sciatica therapy method that will provide you with much relief and it also gives you a chance to relax your back at the same time.

Another very useful sciatica therapy method that you can employ for obtaining relief from sciatic pain is yoga which is wonderful in alleviating even sciatic pain, though it is necessary to first know what the exact causes of your sciatic condition are. Also, to get the most out of this form of sciatica therapy, you may need to first visit Chiropractic or even an orthopedic doctor who can explain the problem to you and then you can use the appropriate yoga exercises to alleviate and eliminate the sciatic pain.

However, yoga as a sciatica therapy method does not in any way mean that it is a cure for sciatic pain and is instead a means to manage your pain better, and if you are lucky, yoga can even help to totally rid you of all the sciatic pain you were feeling. Also, to get the most out of this form of sciatica therapy, you must also ensure that you are being taught the yoga exercises by a competent yoga teacher, who already has a proven record of success in yoga therapy. Pain from sciatica can be very extreme, and so you need to be careful that you don’t push yourself over the limits, and remember to also stay within your threshold of pain at all times.

sciatica symptoms

Learn To Recognize Sciatica Symptoms

Are you one of the estimated 30% of the population that suffers from sciatica? Learning how to recognize the symptoms of sciatica is the first step in understanding this troubling disease and knowing how to treat it.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a collection of symptoms that are thought to be caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, which originates in the lower back, extends through the buttock, wraps around the thigh and continues down the leg into the foot.

Sciatica Symptoms

The sciatica symptom most commonly complained of is pain. Sciatica sufferers complain of a deep, unrelenting pain that originates, like the sciatic nerve, in the lower back and shoots down the buttock and leg. Patients usually report that the sciatica symptoms may come and go depending on how the patient's legs are positioned or what activities they are performing.

Sciatica pain seems to worsen when patients stand or sit for longed periods of time. The most severe sciatica symptoms are reported when patients rise from a seated position, such as on a toilet seat. Other activities involving exertion also exacerbate sciatica symptoms; patients report pain when they laugh, sneeze, cough, or bend backward.

Sciatica sufferers may also experience weakness in their lower leg or foot, sometimes to the point of not being able to walk.

When To Get Help

Sciatica symptoms often subside on their own within a few days, especially if the patient restricts activities and rests. However, there are certain times when sciatica sufferers should see their doctors about their symptoms, and there are even times when patients experiencing sciatica symptoms should get emergency treatment.

If you are suffering from the symptoms of sciatica, you should see your doctor if the symptoms persist after a few days, or if they seem to be getting worse. Also consult your doctor if you are younger than 20 or older than 55, if you have unexplained chills and fever, if you have cancer or a history of cancer, if you are HIV positive, if your trouble bending forward persists after two weeks, or if your weakness is increasing over time.

If you feel sciatica symptoms, you should get emergency treatment if you have a temperature of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, if you cannot move your legs or feet, if the pain is utterly unbearable, if the pain follows a traumatic injury, if the pain is centered in the back of your chest, and if you lose control of your bowels or bladder or experience sensations of numbness in the genital area.

sciatica supplements

Consider These Supplements For Your Sciatica Pain

If you've ever experienced sciatica pain, you will understand the urgency to get proper relief. But you may also be cautious about using prescription drugs, which have been shown to cause severe side effects in some cases. Many people are now considering the use of supplements to relieve sciatica pain and even bring about a degree of healing.

Nutritional Supplements for Sciatica Pain

Sciatica pain occurs when the sciatic nerve, which is the longest in the body, is affected in some way. It could be the result of an injury or an illness. The pain is most often experienced in the lower back and can travel or radiate down the legs. Numbness and tingling may also be present. Conventional treatment uses prescription drugs combined with physical therapy. More severe forms of sciatic nerve damage may need surgery. However, many people are finding real relief for sciatica pain with nutritional supplements.

To get the most benefit from nutritional supplements, they should be used in the right combinations. One of the main supplements to include for sciatica pain relief and healing is thiamine. This vitamin supplement helps heal nerve disorders. In the case of sciatica pain, a larger than recommended dose is required. Since thiamine is part of the B-complex vitamins, it would also be beneficial to take a supplement with a balanced combination of B vitamins. Calcium and magnesium have been shown to decrease muscle spasms, which may be part of the root cause of sciatica pain. Many physicians believe that the sciatic nerve is injured because of an imbalance of the muscles. Using calcium and magnesium can alleviate the spasms and allow the patient to practice gentle muscle aligning stretches to heal this situation. Evening Primrose Oil is a natural anti-inflammatory that doesn't have all the side effects of a prescription drug. Muscle tissues can be soothed through the use of chamomile, while horsetail builds connective tissue. Both of these supplements actually aid in the healing and maintenance of important muscles, which in turn, helps ease sciatica pain. Other useful supplements for sciatica pain are garlic and willow bark.

Use Knowledge and Caution

Before using any supplements to ease your sciatica pain, invest some time learning about the properties of these various vitamins and minerals. With many people becoming more concerned about the dangerous side effects of prescription drugs, nutritional supplements are being widely and wisely used. Many people report positive results as well as an increased feeling of control over their own health.

sciatica relief

Different Forms Of Sciatica Relief

Depending on what kind of sciatica problems you have you can always look into sciatica relief in many different forms. Since a problem with the sciatica nerve is a combination of conditions it is always best to consult with your doctor before trying any therapies or any other kind of relief. In many cases sciatica relief can be a medical procedure which your doctor would obviously be involved in. Many other forms of sciatica relief are through natural relief or even relief through medication. Either way it all depends on the exact cause of the sciatica pain before any doctor, or any other qualified professional, can recommend sciatica relief.

Pain Medications

Some cases of sciatica are recurring lifelong problems that cannot be treated with any other method except for the use of pain medication. Pain medication should only be used as directed by your doctor and if you feel that your prescribed pain medication is not working then contact your doctor immediately. In many cases sciatica relief can also be achieved with anti-inflammatory medications that help to reduce the swelling that is caused by the episode. Once again it is difficult to put a blanket over any sciatica relief because of the wide variety of conditions involved but this method has been used effectively on many patients.

Chiropractic Care

In some cases the sciatica pain is caused by the nerve being pinched in the leg joint in some way and if this is the case then people with this condition find sciatica relief through the use of chiropractic care. A highly skilled and trained chiropractor can manipulate your joint to help relieve your pain but be sure it is a highly skilled and trained chiropractor as incorrect treatment in this manner can have devastating results.

Massage Therapy

One form of sciatica pain has the nerve wrapped around a set of muscles and if those muscles tense up then the sciatica pain can be incredible. A trained massage therapist can offer sciatica relief in this case as they can get the muscle to loosen up and release its grip on the nerve thereby offering relief. A regular regiment of massage therapy can help to keep the muscles around the sciatica calm and help to reduce the likelihood of recurring painful episodes.

Surgery

Whenever any doctor talks about relieving nerve pain the last resort is always surgery. Surgical errors on nerve pain can result in lasting effects to the patient that can be worse than the pain being treated. Make sure that if you are seeking surgical sciatica relief that you and your doctor investigate all the options and find a course of action that can work for you.

sciatica physical therapy exercise

Choose A Sciatica Physical Therapy Exercise According To The Cause Of Your Sciatic Problem

You need to choose your sciatica physical therapy exercise based on the causes of your sciatica problem, which can often occur due to spinal stenosis or a herniated disc, though each condition is distinct from the other and therefore needs different sciatica physical therapy exercise to help alleviate the pain that is known to occur in the foot, thigh, leg and buttocks or even in the lower back.

Exercise For Herniated Disc

If you are suffering from a herniated disc, you would need to choose a sciatica physical therapy exercise that helps relieve the symptoms and which moves the pain as well as symptoms from the lower extremities up into the lower back. Thus, the best sciatica physical therapy exercise for this particular condition would be doing press-ups or even extension exercises.

To perform push-ups or extension exercises, you would need to lie on your stomach and prop your upper body with your elbows while also ensuring that your hips remain on the floor and then you must hold this position for five seconds (in the beginning) and work it till you are able to do about half a minute. Once you have achieved this level of sciatica physical therapy exercise, your therapist may ask you to hold up your upper body with your hands while keeping the arms straight. However, in this exercise, you need to only hold the position for a second though it must be repeated ten times and the exercise must be performed every couple of hours or so.

If, however, you are suffering from sciatica that is the result of having spinal stenosis, then you need to do sciatica physical therapy exercise in which stretching is required. In such exercises, you need to lie on your back and pull your knees to your chest until you achieve a comfortable stretch, and you then need to hold this position for about half a minute after which you can return to the starting position, and then repeat it for as many as six times per session.

There is also a strengthening exercise that is particularly useful for sciatic pain in which you need to lie on your back and push the lower back on the floor through tightening up your lower stomach muscles and pulling your belly button in as well as up for about ten seconds, and you need to repeat this exercise ten times in a session in order to get the best results.

There are however, a great many more sciatica physical therapy exercises for you to choose that mostly still require you to stretch or strengthen your body, and they will each provide you with much needed relief from your sciatic pain, and if you need to know more about other suitable sciatica physical therapy exercises, you just need to ask your physical therapist or a spinal specialist or even a chiropractor.

sciatica physical therapy

Using Sciatica Physical Therapy for Treatment

If you suffer from sciatica, then you certainly know what pain is all about. Sciatica can cause some of the most serious pain in the world, and so whether you or someone you know is dealing with this condition, you will want to be aware of all the different methods of treatment that are available.

What it is

Sciatica is a term that refers to achiness that may include tingling or numbness along the sciatic nerve. It includes any condition that is characterized by pain along the course of the sciatic nerve, and may develop in men, women, or children. Even pregnant women often develop sciatica, and it often even becomes so serious that it is considered as being potentially dangerous, possible even deadly.

Sciatica Physical Therapy

One of the most commonly recommended methods of treatment for sciatica is sciatica physical therapy. First you need to know that exercise is not helpful for acute back pain, and rather it may even make the condition worse than it was to begin with.

However, sciatica physical therapy can be quite helpful because it focuses on the particular areas of the body that are in pain and helps to alleviate this pain. Activities such as walking, stationary biking and swimming are all considered as being beneficial ideas for sciatica physical therapy, however walking and jogging are frowned upon, at least at the initial onset of the condition. This is primarily because it is too stressful on the legs and spine.

Therapeutic sciatica physical therapy helps the patient to increase flexibility and build a stronger body. The patient should have a physical therapist who is someone that will be there to guide them through the exercises and to provide an easy to follow plan which will help the patience to enable continued progress, even once outside of the rehab facility.

Then there are also passive treatments, which would include such therapies as ultrasound, myofascial release, and cold/heat therapies. These therapies are usually administered to a patient before exercise to warm and ready the body for movement.

The most important thing is that you get a proper assessment before going ahead with any type of treatment, regardless of how mild you think it may be. If you use the right treatment, then you just may end up making your condition even worse than it was to begin with. As a result you may end up requiring surgery, something that you obviously want to avoid as much as you can.

sciatica pain and anxiety

Is There Any Relation Between Sciatica Pain And Anxiety

If you ever suffered from sciatica you would know how terrible painful this condition can be. The sciatic pain is generally caused by some type of inflammation which affects the sciatic nerve causing it to radiate intense paid from the mid buttock to the heel of the affected leg. You would not be able to move the leg without feeling excruciating pain, for which most people suffering from this condition would be bed ridden.

How Are Sciatica Pain And Anxiety Related

Unless you go through this pain, which by the way strikes right from the blue, you would have no idea how terrible a condition sciatica is and for uninitiated the shock that you cannot all of a sudden move your leg or legs (as with bilateral sciatica) because of a blinding shooting pain can be enough to trigger a panic or anxiety attack. Thus, though sciatica pain and anxiety combination is not exactly related or complementary as disorders you would often find both in a sciatica patient.

Other reasons why sciatica pain and anxiety go hand in hand is because the person who suffers from this problem would most likely be reduced to bed rest without any reassurance about when and how would the pain subside or be able to move around. The total immobilization caused by the sciatica most often than not causes a lot of anxiety in the mind of the patient who owing to the crippling sciatica pain, fears the worst, i.e. that he or she might never get off the bed again.

Medication For Sciatica Pain And Anxiety Attacks

Though there are cases which respond excellently to allopathic medicines, in this case you need to make an exception and choose homeopathy or aurvedic remedies to fight both sciatica pain and anxiety problems and you will be happy that you did so because in eight cases out of ten the results are positive with both the conditions.

Before you choose the right alternative remedy for you, aim at removing all anxiety symptoms so the body can respond better to the natural interventions that would cure the sciatica pain as well. When you suffer from anxiety, you block the ability of the body to fight with the problems it has – both internal and external. You need to know that pain in particular gets amplified when suffering from mental conditions such as anxiety, depression or other similar disorders. This is why it is imperative that you cure the anxiety before you start with the treatment of the sciatica problem.

sciatica pain

A Personal Account Of Sciatica Pain

Some years ago I had done some preliminary damage to my back that lead to frequent moments of serious sciatica pain in my life. Since then I have replaced the sciatica pain with two herniated discs in my back which is a much more constant and annoying pain but the fact remains that I can give a very detailed first hand account of how sciatica pain comes about and what it is like. It is never a pleasurable experience and sciatica pain is also not something that has any real warnings or lets you know in any way that it is coming on. Sometimes you can trigger it by over exerting your back but it is not always your back that triggers sciatica pain. It is a very tricky and painful little experience that can sneak up on you out of nowhere and leave you crippled in pain for days. To give you an example of what it is like I will give you an account of my first experience with sciatica pain.

I had injured myself playing sports but I was young enough where I didn't pay it any mind. I was in my mid-20's and the thought of a life long temporarily crippling injury never really occurred to me. After the injury that was received from a hit during a friendly football game I rested for a couple of days and then set off to work. At the time I had a 45 minute drive to work and the very first day I was driving to work I noticed a pain starting where my left leg met my waist. It was not quite in my back yet and as the drive went on the sciatica pain was increasing. By the time I got to work I could not stand for very long nor could I sit for very long. The pain was intense. I finally got to the doctor who informed me that it was indeed sciatica pain and gave me muscle relaxers and pain pills. The pills helped a little but all that really helped was time. After a week it went away.

Oh The Joy Of Recurring Pain

For years after that, for what would appear to be no reason whatsoever, my sciatica pain would reappear and make it impossible for me to do anything for days in a row. All I could ever do to deal with it is just wait it out. I remember one time going golfing with some friends and it started after we teed off on hole number 1 and by the 7th hole I couldn't walk. No warning signs and I had done nothing to bring it on. Then there were times I was sure that it was going to come on after major physical activity and it never did. It was unpredictable and painful.

When people tell you they get sciatica pain it is nothing to laugh at. It is crippling and it is sudden. There are solutions to it but in the end, aside from dangerous surgery, all my doctor could ever offer me as a solution is to just wait it out and put up with it.

sciatica nerve symptoms

Some Facts About Sciatica Nerve Symptoms That Would Help You Understand It Better

Sciatica by general definition is a condition that is caused by the inflammation of the sciatica nerve either due to an infection or some type of trauma to the nerve or surrounding tissues which would end up putting pressure on the nerve. The affected sciatica nerve symptoms are characterized by blinding pain that generates in the mid buttock and travels down to the heel and a complete inability to move the leg.

The Sciatica Nerve Symptoms – How Do They Develop

The sciatica nerve is the longest you would find in the human body; it starts from the end of the spinal chord, traverses the pelvic bone down to the thighs and to the calves where it divides itself into two parts – one of which goes to the end of the heel while the other goes to the tip of the toes. The role of the sciatica nerve is to provide sensation from the area covered by it (legs and feet) besides being responsible for the movement of knees, ankles and feet.

The damaged sciatica nerve symptoms would first of all cause acute pain while moving the legs as well a peculiar numbness that would scare you into thinking that you are suffering from a paralytic attack. There are many causes for the sciatica nerve symptoms some very obvious and some other that require in depth investigations to identify it.

Some of the most known causes for the sciatica nerve symptoms would be injury of the pelvis or in the pelvic area, tumors that put direct pressure on the nerve, osteoarthritis and the herniated lumbar disc which can cause acute inflammation of the nerve.

The Diagnosis Of The Sciatica Condition

Since there are many possibilities that cause the sciatica pain, you would need to undergo a battery of tests in order to check and rule out the possibility of each cause one by one. Depending upon the localized sciatica nerve symptoms, the doctor would decide how best the diagnostic study should be carried out. An MRI scan would be one of the best ways to identify the cause for the pain generated by this nerve.

As long as the nerve is not permanently damaged, healing is possible though it would take several months and a lot of pain until this happens. Combining allopathic medicines with alternative natural cures most often that not brings about fast relief from pain and accelerates the cure of the condition. A word of caution – ensure that you keep your doctor abreast of all the alternative medicines or methods you adopt lest you stumble upon something that would harm more than benefit you.

sciatica nerve pain

Sciatica Nerve Pain: What Causes This Condition

Sciatica nerve pain is attributed to the sciatica nerve that is found at the base of the spine. This very large nerve runs down past the buttocks and into the back of the left thigh. The sciatica nerve is important in the body as it is the way the lower portion of the body sends information and sensations to the brain. When this nerve is impacted, a person can experience extreme pain, shooting pain and even numbness.

What Are The Causes Of Sciatica Nerve Pain?

Sciatica nerve pain is can be caused by several different factors. A herniated disc is a cause of sciatica nerve pain that is common. When the disc herniates, it bulges and causes pressure on the sciatica nerve that then results in pain in the legs. The disc may also rupture which then causes fluid to be released that will cause even more inflammation in the sciatica nerve region, again resulting in sciatica nerve pain.

Another cause of sciatica nerve pain is lumbar spinal stenosis. This condition is most often found in mature adults and is the result of nerve compression brought about by the narrowing of the passage ways in which the nerves travel. When the nerves are compressed sciatica nerve pain is the result.

A trauma can also cause sciatica nerve pain. An accident to the lower region of the back can result in damage to the sciatica nerve. This can occur in a car accident or even while playing contact sports where a person may be hit hard in the back.

Spinal tumors may also cause sciatica nerve pain. When an abnormal growth occurs on the spine, there is the possibility of compression of the nerves that will then result in sciatica nerve damage. These tumors can be benign or cancerous.

Piriformis Syndrome is another cause of sciatica nerve pain. This is a condition that affects the piriformis muscle that runs under the thigh bone and connects to the hip bone and assists in rotating the hip. This condition can be difficult to detect and may require several tests to be performed. The pain occurs when spasms happen within this muscle that then put pressure on the sciatica nerve.

There can be several reasons why a person is experiencing sciatica nerve pain. It is important to consult with a physician to try and discover the root cause of this condition and then make a plan on how to treat the condition.

sciatica leg pain

The Cause Of Sciatica Leg Pain

Having chronic pain is something that many suffer with on a daily basis. It can be difficult to determine what is causing the pain and what to do about the pain. Suffering with sciatica leg pain can affect a person's daily life and routine.

What Is Sciatica Leg Pain?

The sciatica nerve is one of largest nerves in the entire body. Its job is to relay information to the brain in regards to how the leg is moving. This information courses through the nerve to the brain. All of this information is then processed in the brain at lightening speed to evaluate what the body is doing.

The sciatica nerve itself is located at the base of the spine, from there it then runs down past the hip joint and down the back of the thigh. The sciatica nerve can become damaged when there is a compression in the vertebrae of the spine. If there is a disc problem where the normal cushions between the vertebrae are compromised, then the sciatica nerve can become caught and pressed on.

This will then result in sciatica leg pain, or numbness in the legs. There are several other conditions that can also result in sciatica leg pain and these include spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis both conditions can cause the sciatica nerve to become irritated and then cause sciatica leg pain.

A person with this condition will feel pain, numbness or weakness in the legs as a result of the pressure put on sciatica nerve. Sometimes specific movements will cause even more pain, something as simple as coughing can jolt the sciatica nerve causing sciatica leg pain.

If this condition is suspected, often anti-inflammatory medications may be used to help with the inflammation surrounding the sciatica nerve. A doctor will perform a complete history and evaluation of the condition and then may suggest or prescribe anti-inflammatory medications. Sometimes steroids are prescribed as they are a very strong anti-inflammatory medication. Rest is another measure that should be taken in order to help recover from sciatica leg pain.

Physical therapy may be another recommendation after the pain is in control. It is important to get moving again after having problems with sciatica nerve. Most patients recover with no need for surgery, but in some instances it may be necessary to remove a ruptured disk or find out what is pressing on the nerve.

If sciatica leg pain is a problem, consult with a physician to determine the best course of action for your symptoms.

sciatica in pregnancy

Dealing With Sciatica in Pregnancy

Sciatica can be an incredibly frustrating and painful condition. Although not overly common, it still affects millions of people worldwide and therefore even if you are not a sufferer yourself, it would be wise for you to be a bit more informed on it.

What it is

Sciatica is not actually a disorder in itself, but rather is a symptom of another problem that involves the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the entire body and runs all the way from the pelvis through the buttocks and hip area and then down the back of each leg. It is the sciatic nerve which controls many of the muscles in your lowers legs. It also provides the feelings to your thighs, legs, and feet, and therefore is obviously one of the most vital and important nerves in the human body.

Sciatica in Pregnancy

The problem with sciatica in pregnancy is that many women assume that what they are dealing with is sciatica when it is really something else, often even something more dangerous. Sciatica in pregnancy is very common however, as the woman has the weight of the baby in her abdomen and which is creating a lot of extra pressure on the sciatic nerve.

There are times when this nerve may become inflamed and most women describe this feeling as being one of pins and needles, similar to when your leg falls asleep, for instance. A lot of women develop sciatica in pregnancy but it is important to realize that sciatica is not a result necessarily of being pregnant.

A few of the most commonly complained of symptoms include pins and needles in the lower back or leg, shooting or burning in the legs or buttocks, pain in the lower back or pelvis, and numbness or tingling in the leg or feet.

Treatment

Treatment for sciatica in pregnancy is very different than treatment for sciatica in other cases. Many times sciatica pain will disappear on its own but in other situations there are a few treatment methods that may be used. There are certain exercises that can be performed which will help relieve the pain caused by sciatica, and which will not only help improve comfort but also strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, back muscles, and abdominal muscles.

Make sure that you speak to your doctor about your condition and ensure that they do a proper assessment and diagnosis before deciding on a method of treatment.

sciatica buzzing in foot

Sciatica Buzzing In Foot: A Symptom Of Sciatica Nerve Problems

Sciatica buzzing in foot pain has been associated with the larger problem of sciatica nerve. The sciatica nerve is a very important nerve that is found in the lower spine region. This nerve, which is the largest in the body, is the diameter of a finger and runs down the back of the spine and into the back of the thigh. This nerve has the responsibility of relaying information to the brain about body movements and pain or other sensations.

Sciatica buzzing in foot is one of the symptoms of sciatica nerve problems. The buzzing sensation is caused by the compression of the sciatica nerve. This can be the result of a few different things. A herniated disc will cause compression the sciatica nerve that will then result in sciatica buzzing in foot and other pain along the sciatica nerve line.

Some of the other causes of sciatica compression include trauma to the spine, tumors that may be on the spine the narrowing of the passages that the nerves run through, vertebrae slipping and even forms of osteoarthritis can cause damage to the sciatica nerve.

Symptoms Of Sciatica Nerve Problems Including Sciatica Buzzing In Foot

Sciatica buzzing in foot is just one of the symptoms of a problem with the sciatica nerve. Other problems include pain running down the back of the thigh and lower back pain.

The sciatica buzzing in foot pain is one where the person literally feels their foot vibrating. This can also occur in the legs and can be very painful. This buzzing sensation may continue for periods of time through out the day and can also occur at night making it very difficult to sleep.

If sciatica buzzing in foot pain is an issue, it is important to seek out medical attention. A doctor will take a full medical history and discuss your symptoms in order to find the right course of treatment. This may involve taking anti-inflammatory medications to help reduce the inflammation around the sciatica nerve. It may also require physical therapy to help with movements that can help the sciatica nerve.

Surgery is another possibility and may be the only way to get relief from sciatica nerve problems. Your physician can make suggestions on ways to help alleviate the pain and not to disturb the nerve further.

Sciatica nerve pain can be difficult to deal with and a discussion with a physician is the best course to take when dealing with this issue.

sciatica and pregnancy

Sciatica and Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Sciatica can be incredibly painful and even possibly dangerous when it happens during pregnancy. The issue of sciatica and pregnancy is therefore one of great importance, especially if you yourself are a woman who is or who is planning to get pregnant.

What it is

On the topic of sciatica and pregnancy, the first thing you should know is what sciatica actually is and what is involved with it. The term sciatica specifically describes the symptoms of leg pain and weakness that travels from the lower back through to the buttocks and down the legs, even often into the feet.

One of the most important things to understand here is that sciatica is a symptom of a problem, more specifically of something compressing or irritating the nerve roots that comprise the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica and Pregnancy

The issue of sciatica and pregnancy is particularly important. Pregnancy related changes in the body can result in causing pelvic pain and back ache and can also cause sciatica to develop. It is however, important to realize that many women believe they have sciatica during pregnancy when they really do not.

This is why if you think you are dealing with sciatica in pregnancy you get in to see your doctor immediately and have them make a proper diagnosis. Never go ahead with any form of treatment before you are absolutely sure what you are dealing with, because this could actually result in causing even more problems.

Treatment

There are a few options available to you when it comes to treatment of your sciatica. First you should see your general practitioner who will give you a pregnancy support belt to wear and this will help to relieve pressure on the spine. Anti-inflammatory drugs are also often used, and steroid injections can also be given, but only after the baby has been born.

There are also many things that you can do at home to help yourself deal with the pain, for instance applying a heat or ice pack to the inflamed or painful area for even just a few minutes will help a lot, as will wearing flat soft shoes rather than high heels. You want to stay mobile rather than lying down all the time because this will only make you focus even more on the pain.

Watch your posture at all times and make sure that you do not slouch because this will only add to your back problems.

sciatica and leg weakness

Sciatica And Leg Weakness: How These Are Connected

Sciatica nerve damage has a wide range of impact on the body. This nerve is the largest in the body and runs from the base of the spine down the back of the legs. The sciatica nerve helps to transmit information from the legs to the brain. This very important nerve can become damaged with resulting pain from the sciatica and leg weakness can occur.

Damage to the sciatica can be the result of several different conditions or situations. Since the main nerve is located at the base of the spin, trauma to the spine or even tumors on the spine can have an impact on this nerve. If there is a disc that has moved out of place or has become herniated, this too can have an impact on the sciatica nerve.

Anything that is done to the lower back region can impact the sciatica nerve. The nerve can become compressed, or pushed into the spine which will then result in pain from the sciatica and leg weakness can also be a symptom.

This type of compression can cause the leg to feel like it is vibrating, or even the foot can feel like it is vibrating. The pain can be daily and feel even more pronounced when sudden movements are made or even if the weather changes.

How Sciatica And Leg Weakness Are Related

Sciatica and leg weakness are connected as they are the result of a sciatica nerve that has been impacted. If a person begins noticing that they are experiences tingling, pain or leg weakness they really need to consult with a physician. The leg weakness is a red flag that the sciatica needs assistance and a physician should be talked to. Urinary incontinence can also be another symptom of sciatica.

When this large nerve is compressed the legs are impacted and pain can be felt running down the legs too. This is an important nerve in the body and if a person is experiencing pain, numbness, shooting pain, tingling or leg weakness these are all signs that the sciatica nerve needs to be checked out.

A physician will take a complete medical history and may suggest some additional tests to take a look at what is happening. Anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to help with the inflammation that is occurring around the sciatica nerve. Surgery may also be suggested and should be considered.

The pain of sciatica and leg weakness associated can be successfully treated. Speak with your physician about your symptoms.

sciatica and bone metastasis

The Connection Between Sciatica and Bone Metastasis

Bone metastasis can be the cause for sciatica pain and the presence of both of these medical conditions can result in severe discomfort. Learning about the connection between sciatica pain and bone metastasis can help a patient understand the physical problems, which will lead to the most efficient course of treatment.

Bone Metastasis and Sciatica Pain

Bone metastasis occurs when cancer from one part of the body spreads to the bones. This occurs most frequently in the cases of breast, lung and prostate cancer, although it's been reported to happen in about half of all cancer patients. When cancer enters the bones, a large number of complications are likely to occur. Often, one of the first symptoms of bone metastasis is a fracture, but sciatica pain can also signal this condition.

The sciatic nerve is the largest in the body, and is located in the lower part of the spinal column and travels down the leg to the foot. Any injury or pressure on this nerve causes pain, which may radiate to the back, hip, leg or foot. In the case of bone metastasis, sciatica pain can be caused by a spinal fracture or spinal cord compression, as a result of the cancer. The spine is usually the most common place for a fracture to occur in cancer patients with bone metastasis. The proximity of the spine to the sciatic nerve further complicates this medical problem. If a fracture occurs, the dislocation of the bone may cause pressure on the sciatic nerve and results in additional pain. If any portion of the sciatic nerve experiences stress or becomes damaged, the pain may not stay in a localized region, but may travel the length of the entire nerve pathway. Understandably, patients with both bone metastasis and sciatica pain will need medicinal help for the pain as well as aggressive treatment for the cancer.

Diagnosing Sciatica Pain

Anyone who has sciatica pain should consult a doctor to determine the exact cause. A thorough investigation into when the pain was first experienced will be recorded. To aid in a proper diagnosis, a MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or a CT scan (computed tomography) may be performed. There will also be a pain assessment test, whereby the physician can observe the position of the body that causes the discomfort. Although there is a connection between bone metastasis and sciatica pain, there can be many other ways in which the sciatic nerve can be damaged or injured. A thorough examination by a doctor can ease your mind as well as your pain.

sciatica alternative remedies

Alternative Remedies For Sciatica Pain That Really Work

If you've been diagnosed with sciatica, you probably want two things. The first is to get rid of the annoying pain that accompanies this condition. The second thing is to relieve the pain with as few side effects as possible. Conventional drug treatments for sciatica can create dangerous complications, which is why more and more people are seeking alternative remedies.

Understanding Sciatica Pain

Let's start with some basic information, because understanding why you have sciatica pain will help you choose a suitable alternative remedy. The sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the body, extends from your lower back, through your pelvis and down the back of your legs. Many medical experts believe that the root cause of sciatic pain is a muscle imbalance. Therefore, alternative remedies for sciatica pain don't seek to only provide needed relief; instead, they attempt to correct any muscle imbalance. It should be noted however, that these alternative remedies do not provide an instant relief of sciatica pain. But on the flip side, pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications usually prescribed by a doctor may cause serious side effects. That's why understanding the type of sciatic pain you have, and its apparent cause is necessary when choosing a treatment plan.

Common and Effective Alternative Remedies for Sciatica Pain

Since sciatica pain usually involves a muscle imbalance, a good way to seek relief and possible healing is through yoga. Before starting this type of program, be sure to mention your sciatica condition to your yoga instructor. There are certain exercises that may aggravate this problem, but there are also various stretching techniques that can greatly help you. Being aware of this will enhance your entire yoga instruction and give you the maximum amount of relief. Also note that yoga isn't only about the physical body; rather, it seeks to develop a relationship between the mind and body. By doing this, pain management becomes easier for a person suffering from sciatica. Using the mind to control pain is an advanced stage of yoga, but one that can be effectively mastered.

Acupuncture and acupressure both use the principle of restoring and maintaining a healthy flow of energy in the body by focusing on the Meridians, which are precise points of energy convergence and movement. Acupuncture uses very thin needles that are inserted into these special spots in the body. The needles don't penetrate far into the skin and this whole procedure is painless. Acupressure is similar, except that pressure is placed on these strategic locations. Both of these therapies produce encouraging results without the dangerous side effects of prescription drugs. Alternative remedies for sciatica pain are gaining in popularity, as more and more people experience the positive results.

sciatica nerve

Pain Getting On Your Last Nerve? Is It Sciatica?

The dictionary definition of sciatica is simple: sciatica is the compression or irritation of a branch of the sciatic nerve, resulting in sciatica, or pain.

What Nerve Causes Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve, causing sciatica, is the largest nerve in the human body. No wonder we experience disorders like sciatica and feel pain when this sciatica prone nerve is harmed!

Generally speaking, the nerve starts between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebra of the spine and extends downward, wrapping around the thigh, extending to the lower part of the buttock, then running down the back of the thigh, behind the knee, and into the calf muscles and to the feet. Although sciatica patients may experience pain anywhere along the nerve, sciatica usually manifests itself as pain extending from the buttock into the back of one or both legs.

What Are The Causes Of Pressure And Sciatica On The Nerve?

Pressure on the sciatic nerve can be caused by a variety of factors. The nerve may be compressed by spinal stenosis, or a naturally occurring narrowing in the opening of the spine. Another cause of sciatica is spinal disc degeneration or herniation, where the cushioning material in a spinal disc leaks out, causing the bone to rub against itself. The spine gets out of alignment, causing pressure on the nerve that causes sciatica.

It is important for doctors to take a complete history from the patient to try to pinpoint the cause of the patient's sciatica. Diagnostic tests such as MRIs and CT scans are also helpful in diagnosing sciatica.

How Is Sciatica Treated?

Sciatica caused by spinal stenosis and spinal disc herniation or degeneration is usually treated with surgery. No surgeon can promise a 100% successful outcome, so patients should get a second opinion and thoroughly consider the implications or surgery before they agree to treat sciatica with surgery.

Sciatica will usually eventually resolve itself with time and rest. Patients who can get complete bed rest will usually notice relief within a few days as the sciatica and sciatic nerve have a chance to heal.

Patients with chronic pain who elect not to have surgery may wish to explore a variety of options for pain management. Some patients find relief by using medical marijuana, in areas where the treatment is permitted by state law. Other patients manage their pain with other alternative therapies, such as diet, exercise, herbal remedies, acupuncture, or hypnotherapy.

sciatica

Back Pain And Sciatica

When you consider that the human spine runs all the way from the neck into the pelvis, it's no wonder that most of us will experience back pain at one time or another. Exploring the spine helps us understand sciatica and other types of pain and how they can be managed.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is pain that lasts more than six months and that cannot be relieved by medical or surgical care. Chronic pain often results from prior injury, from neuropathy, or sciatica.

The course of treatment for chronic pain will vary greatly depending on the individual, the cause of the pain, and his or her health care provider; however, many patients find relief in alternative forms of medicine. Medical marijuana, acupuncture, and hypnotherapy have all been proven to effectively treat chronic back pain.

Spinal Stenosis

Stenosis is a disease characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal. Patients who suffer from stenosis may experience low back pain or pain in the buttocks, leg and thigh area when they stand or walk. Patients with severe stenosis may experience numbness and weakness in their legs. The pain usually improves when the patient sits or rests or changes position to alleviate the pressure on the spinal cord.

Stenosis is diagnosed using a CT scan and can be treated by surgery to widen the spinal canal.

Stiffness And Tightness Of The Back

A tight, stiff sensation in the muscles of the neck, back, arms, and legs, is one of the most common types of back pain complained of by the general population. These sensations are usually caused by changes in the muscles surrounding the afflicted area.

Most tight back muscles can be traced to poor posture, which is usually a result of weakness of the muscles surrounding the spine. The simplest thing patients who suffer from tight back muscles can do, and the thing that will have the greatest effect, is to exercise the abdominal muscles, the back muscles, and other muscles that make up the body's core. It takes strong muscles to support the back and the soft tissues of the stomach, breasts, and torso. Once these muscles are strengthened, the patient's posture improves and the symptoms of tight, stiff muscles disappear.

Sciatica

Sciatica is pain that begins in the hip or buttocks and continues all the way down the leg. The condition is thought to be caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Most patients elect conservative treatment for sciatica: taking anti-inflammatory medications, limiting physical activity, and resting.

physical therapy for sciatica

Physical Therapy for Sciatica Recommended by Experts

Physical Therapy plays a very important role in helping sciatica patients, who are suffering from chronic low back pain. Physical Therapy for Sciatica is specialized and for each patient there should be doctor-directed programs. It is not right for the patients to plan their own exercise programs, because professionals would have a better understanding of the limitations and special needs of back pain.

Two Steps

Basically there are two vital steps for Physical Therapy for Sciatica. In the first stage the patient should be educated and trained in correct movement. For this purpose heat or electro-therapies like therapeutic ultrasound or low-energy lasers are sometimes used, but they may not always be beneficial.

Secondly, if the back pain continues to persist after 5 weeks, Physical Therapy for Sciatica is used for rehabilitation. This includes the use of exercises for the patient, in which the spine in kept in neutral positions during all daily activities.

Purpose of Exercises

There are many exercises which help in the Physical Therapy for Sciatica. In any case active exercise is important for sciatica relief. Patients should therefore engage in a regular program of gentle strengthening and stretching exercises. In this way they can recover quickly from an attack of sciatica and it can also help to prevent future attacks.

Expert Advice

To recommend Physical Therapy for Sciatica a physical therapist, certified athletic trainer, chiropractor, physiatrist or a spine specialist should be consulted. They are the right people who can treat back pain and leg pain associated with sciatica. Of course it is important to get an accurate diagnosis for the cause of sciatica pain, as the recommended exercises will depend on the cause.

When a chiropractor or an osteopath implements a certain manipulation of Physical Therapy for Sciatica, he knows exactly the type of manipulation, the amount of force, the direction of the manipulation and the frequency of application when he manages patients suffering from sciatica. Combining this treatment from the expert with various exercises also recommended by him can be very effective.

Physical Therapy for Sciatica is especially very effective after a surgery. Sometimes, if the patient experiences a great deal of pain relief after the surgery, he tends to consider physical therapy as unnecessary. But after any spine procedure muscle function is at its best and exercise will definitely expedite recovery and reduce potential future problems. The aim of such training for Physical Therapy for Sciatica is to provide enough practice and repetition so that the function of the muscles is automatic and can perform well during all other activities and exercises.

After receiving recommendations for Physical Therapy for Sciatica, the exercises must be done regularly and correctly. The patients should pay a lot of attention to the posture and body mechanics in order to be benefited from the therapy. If they continue with a program of gentle exercise and stretching, it will naturally help their current problem. But in the long run it will be good for overall back health and reduce back problems in the future.

natural remedies for sciatica

Get The Best From The Natural Remedies For Sciatica – What Choices Do You Have

When you fall prey to sciatica you will realize that there is precious little in the modern medicine that would really help you fight and control the pain cause by it. Fortunately there are many natural remedies for sciatica discovered and documented so you could have your pick according to your preference.

The Many Choices Of Natural Remedies For Sciatica

One of the most popular among the available natural remedies for sciatica is the acupuncture which originates from China. This method tracks and stops the pain or problem through the manipulation of the nerve network that is mapping the human body with the help of needles. This is a very effective method, but you need to be warned that it is slow and requires a lot of patience from you.

For those who fear the use of needles in the wake of AIDS and other similar risks, you should be happy to know that acupressure works in the same way only it does not need needles; it uses instead pressure to stimulate the nerve centers.

Herbal medicine is yet another excellent one among the recommended and practiced natural remedies for sciatica. Most of these herbal remedies have been endorsed by clandestine medical research which sought to understand their impact on a host of disorders including sciatica. Considering that your pain is the direct result of the inflammation of the sciatic nerve, you should use a mixture of ginger and turmeric in 1:1 ratio to control and reverse it. Both these roots are well known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

The Willow bark which contains the same compound found in aspirin – the salicylic acid – can also be used to control the pain while using other natural remedies for sciatica to remove the root cause of the problem for a permanent cure.

Yoga is used extensively for controlling the sciatica pain with great success. You would need to be careful to rule out any back or spinal chord injury before taking up this method lest you would end up injuring yourself further. Even when you are sure that there is no underlying problem other than sciatica, you would need to guide yourself by using the pain as a guide on how far can you go with the yoga postures. Never force yourself against the pain when you exercise as that is the inbuilt alarm of the body which shows you your limits.

Other natural remedies for sciatica would be regulated diet regimen, biofeedback which is becoming very popular all over the world and chiropractic care. You need to research and educate yourself on each of these alternatives and choose the one that you find most suitable to your needs when such need arises.

medication for sciatica

Medication for Sciatica is only for Pain Relief

Pain relief is the prime concern and initial treatment for sciatica. If the attack is acute or very painful, the patient is advised bed rest for up to a week and along with it he is administered Medication for Sciatica.

Treatment

The treatment for sciatica is often non-operative. The treatment that is initially given is to address the inflammation associated with the disease. When medication starts it is often anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin or Celebrex. Muscle relaxers are often prescribed by doctors as well. Sometimes oral steroids have to be given to some patients who need a more powerful anti-inflammatory treatment. Steroids like a Medrol Dose-Pak may have potential side-effects, but since they have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect, they can be helpful in treating sciatica.

Medication for Sciatica can be stopped once there is less pain. After that the patients are advised to do regular exercises and physical therapy. Even heat packs and ice packs are soothing for the muscles. But if the pain persists, doctors may prescribe Medication for Sciatica even after that in the form of an epidural steroid injection. Through this anti-inflammatory medication is delivered directly to the inflamed area around the nerves. But they may not be effective for all patients. Also corticosteroid injections can reduce nerve inflammation and pain for a long period of time.

During the acute phase of the disease the Medication for Sciatica is generally narcotics and sometimes lumbar injections. The analgesics help to reduce swelling while relieving pain. Simple anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen may also be prescribed by the doctors. And if the pain is chronic, different types of pain Medication for Sciatica is given.

One should avoid taking a long-term dosing of any Medication for Sciatica, because the body gets immune to it and does not react in the way it should. Often antidepressant drugs have to taken along with the muscle relaxants, because they are often effective in treating pain.

If early therapy is successful and there is less pain, the patient is advised by doctors and therapists to follow a long-term program in order to maintain a healthy back and also prevent a re-injury. But sometimes, if the pain is chronic and all conservative treatment fails, surgery has to be done. This is inevitable especially when there is evidence of nerve or nerve-root damage.

In general most cases of sciatica are treatable with Medication for Sciatica followed by physical therapy. The treatment generally lasts four to six weeks, after which the person can resume normal activities.

massage techniques for sciatica

Massage Techniques for Sciatica to be Implemented by Experts

Massage therapy is a popular treatment for sciatica and should not be underestimated. In some hospitals there are departments, which specialize in massage therapy. Among them the Massage Techniques for Sciatica are practiced for chronic, bed-ridden sciatica patients. One session of massage therapy lasts approximately twenty minutes and it has to be done once a day. Patients really undergo life-saving changes after being treated to the Massage Techniques for Sciatica.

There are various Oriental as well as western massage techniques for Sciatica, but the correct massage technique to be used by your body should be determined by an expert, and later your body will be able to tell whether the technique has been successful to relieve your pain.

Piriformis Syndrome

Sciatica is inflammation of the sciatic nerve. The patient is suffering from pain, either on one side or on both. Sometimes there is numbness or tingling and leg movement is often limited. One cause of sciatica could be where the sciatic nerve runs through the belly of the piriformis muscle instead of running under the muscle. This is called the piriformis syndrome and there are special massage techniques to combat this problem.

Various Techniques

There are many Massage Techniques for Sciatica, and they are recommended especially if the person has disk problems and they have been caused by muscular imbalance. The Massage Techniques for Sciatica are ischemic compression, cross-fiber friction, and myofascial release to the quadratus lumborum, gluteus minimus, gluteus medius and psoas major. In cases of sciatica no deep work should be done over the sciatic nerve. If the massage therapist is working on the piriformis, extreme care should be used, since it is very close to the sciatic nerve.

Methods Used

The methods used for the Massage Techniques for Sciatica are static compression or longitudinal stripping. Compressing and stripping the muscle while it is under contraction magnifies the effect of force. In this way the therapist can go deeper into the muscle. At all times the massage therapist should maintain a global view of the muscular imbalance. It is advisable to include massage on all the hip rotators and muscles in the low back for sciatica pain.

One of the basic rules of Massage Techniques for Sciatica is to maintain a continuous communication between the massage therapist and the client during the massage. The therapist should be informed as soon as the client feels any nerve sensation that travels down the leg, while the massage is going on. In this way the therapist can gauge to alter the pressure or even adjust the direction of force or focus on a different location. People that have sciatica nerve problems experience pain, tingling in legs, shooting pain down their legs, and even foot pain can be associated with the sciatica nerve.

This condition occurs when the sciatica nerve, which runs from the base of the spine down the back of the legs. This large nerve can become damaged and result in pain for the person.

Damage can happen when discs become herniated or bulge, the spinal column is impacted by a trauma, tumors along the spinal column or there are even conditions that restrict the area in which the nerves run. All of these conditions impact or put pressure on the sciatica nerve.

The Latest Sciatica Advisory: What To Do

If you suspect that you have a sciatica nerve problem it is important to seek medical advice. The latest sciatica advisory suggests that getting on the path of proper treatment can help this condition.

A doctor will run some tests and discuss possible causes of sciatica nerve damage. Often the sciatica nerve just needs time to heal and rest may be the best of the latest sciatica advisory suggestions.

A doctor may also prescribe some medications that can help with the inflammation that may be surrounding the nerve and putting pressure onto the sciatica nerve. These medications may include steroids that are known to work well with inflammation. A combination of rest and anti-inflammatory medications may be all that is needed to treat the problem, but in some instances more intervention is needed.

If the symptoms don't improve, the latest sciatica advisory suggests pursuing other forms of treatment. Sometimes massage or physical therapy can be helpful. Massaging the nerve area can help and physical therapy can also assist.

Surgery is another option and is usually regulated as a last result. Surgery may be needed if a disc is herniated or damaged. By having surgery the pressure is removed from the sciatica nerve and the pain is eliminated. Surgery of course comes with its own complications and the recovery time is longer than other forms of treatment, but in the end this may be the only way to fully recover from sciatica nerve damage.

The latest sciatica advisory suggests that speaking with a physician to discover a course of treatment is the best choice. If your experiencing symptoms of sciatica nerve damage, consult with your physician and get yourself on the road to recovery.

infrared light sciatica therapy

Infrared Light Sciatica Therapy: Fastest Pain Relief

Light Therapy has been used for a long time by spas and dermatologists. Now Infrared Light Therapy is used for any pain complaint and has been used successfully against sciatica. Infrared Light Sciatica Therapy is safe, painless, non-invasive and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved. It is the latest treatment of choice for speeding up the recovery time for sciatica. This type of therapy increases circulation and blood flow to the pain area. The Infrared Light Sciatica Therapy helps to reduce the inflammation, the pain is decreased and the healing process is accelerated.

Normally an attack of sciatica lasts about 6 weeks, but with the Infrared Light Sciatica Therapy it takes 4 weeks or even less to heal. Hence you can resume your duties pain free, and lead a happier and more productive life.

How It Works

Let us see how the Infrared Light Sciatica Therapy is unique from other forms of treatment for acute and chronic pain management. An infrared camera takes a high resolution thermal image of the body. This is done to determine the exact site of the pain and inflammation. Once the exact spot on the body has been located, an Infrared Light Therapy device called a Photonic Stimulator is then applied on multiple acupuncture or trigger points for a maximum of 60 seconds.

While the treatment is being done, live images of the exact site are displayed on a high resolution monitor. The total treatment time can be from 3 minutes to 15 minutes. Sometimes just one treatment is enough to achieve pain relief, whereas in severe cases a series of treatments may be necessary.

An Infrared Light Sciatica Therapy device emits small beams of light called photons to the targeted areas of the patient's pain. Many of the photons penetrate 2cm to 3 cm into the tissue. They react with electrons and energize the dysfunctional sympathetic nerve cell membrane.

Effects

The Infrared Light Sciatica Therapy not only reduces pain but also stimulates nerve function and circulation. It also promotes tissue healing. Circulatory disorders can be improved because it helps to improve the metabolism and circulation. It provides analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous effects as well as wound-healing effects. Even post-surgical pain can be treated by the infrared light therapy.

Actually the nourishing rays of infrared and red light are emitted most abundantly by the sun during sunrise. The Infrared Light Sciatica Therapy uses the same rays to stimulate the mitochondria of the cells to produce enough energy. Because of the stimulation the cells function at their optimal efficiency. Therefore, by working on a cellular level, the body acquires the natural ability to heal itself.

The Infrared Light Sciatica Therapy has many advantages over other modalities which provide more short-term relief with increased circulation and a mild healing effect. The therapy can be used directly over the spine, and does not require the use of gels, lotions, pads, or towels. It is even safer than metal or plastic implants, glues, sutures, pacemakers and spinal-cord stimulators.

foods to fight sciatica pain

Fighting Sciatica Pain with Food

As with any course of treatment that goes against conventional medicine, there is some disagreement about whether or not foods can actually fight sciatica pain. Since prescription medicines often have unwanted and dangerous side effects, many people are opting for a treatment plan that would be beneficial without the potential for causing harm to the body. There has been considerable research done on fighting sciatica pain with food, and many people are experiencing a real sense of relief following these dietary guidelines.

Nutritional Recommendations

"You are what you eat" is a popular expression with a great deal of truth behind it. What we put into our bodies directly affects our health. In the case of sciatica pain, there are certain foods that can fight for you or against you. Knowing the difference can make an enormous improvement in your health. The first recommendation is to avoid all meat and animal protein products. Animal foods contain uric acid, which puts a strain on the kidneys, and therefore could aggravate back pain. Gravies, oils, fats, and sugars, as well as heavily processed food should also be avoided. These foods have a negative impact on overall health, and can cause weight gain that can contribute to pain. Often, a fasting program is encouraged, although this type of remedy should be first discussed with a doctor. The idea behind fasting is to cleanse the body of impurities and thereby enable the body to heal itself. Besides certain foods, liquids can make an important contribution in the fight against sciatica pain. To decrease a pain that comes on suddenly, try drinking two large glasses of quality water. Muscle aches and back pain are frequently linked to dehydration and giving your body the necessary liquids may take away that pain.

Good Old Advice

Although it's been said a hundred times (or more) good health comes about through proper eating. A healthy diet gives your body the proper nutrition it needs to perform vital functions. Just as certain foods can aggravate back pain, there are other food choices that will benefit your whole body. Raw fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of good nutrition, providing an abundance of vitamin C, which is known for its healing properties. The nutrients in dairy products can help repair bone tissue, thereby making the connective layers around the sciatic nerve stronger. The body is a complex organism and it takes many types of foods to cause it to work at its optimal level. By adhering to a healthy diet, the foods you eat may help you in the fight against sciatica pain by giving the body the necessary ammunition to heal the underlying problem.

exercises for sciatica

Exercises For Sciatica

If you have sciatica, you know the symptoms.

You feel the sharp, severe pain deep in your lower back, extending through your buttock, and shooting into your leg. If you are like most sciatica sufferers, the pain comes and goes depending on your activities and your physical position. You lie down and get some rest, and the symptoms improve with time.

But what if you can't just lie down? What if you need to keep moving through your sciatica? There's good news: exercise can be helpful in managing the painful symptoms of sciatica.

Exercise Helps Sciatica

First, exercise in general will help with sciatica and back pain. The longer you stay immobile, the more your muscles will contract and atrophy. It is important to keep moving as much as you can, even when you are sidelined by the pain of sciatica.

Second, there are specific exercises for sciatica that can be helpful in preventing and managing the disease. Exercises for sciatica can be done during a course of physical therapy, but exercises for sciatica are usually done by the patient on their own, in the comfort and privacy of the patient's home.

The best exercises for sciatica are those that stretch and strengthen the areas affected by the disease. One or more of these mild exercises for sciatica may prove effective in managing your sciatica pain:

Heel Slides: Lying on your back, slide your heel toward your buttocks, slowly bending and straightening the knee. Do 8 repetitions on each side.

Abdominal Contractions: Lying on your back with your knees bent, imagine you are holding a sponge between your belly button and your spine. Contract your abdominal muscles, as if you are squeezing the water out of your imaginary sponge. Hold the squeeze for five seconds; then relax. Do 8 repetitions.

Straight Leg Raise: Lie on your back with one knee bent, the other leg straight. Tighten your abdominal muscles to brace your lower back, and lift the straight leg straight up, holding it six to twelve inches off the ground for one to five seconds. Slowly lower your leg to the ground. Repeat 8 times on each side.

Once you master these beginning exercises for sciatica, try an intermediate exercise:

Hamstring stretch: Lying on your back with knees bent, grasp one thigh behind the knee. Supporting the leg, slowly straighten the knee until you feel the stretch down the back of your thigh. Hold the stretch for 15 to 20 seconds. Do 8 repetitions on each side.

does glucosamine help sciatica

The Jury Is Out On Does Glucosamine Help Sciatica

There are sure to be many worried sciatica patients that just need to find out for sure does glucosamine help sciatica and part of the reason for their search to find a suitable answer to this question is that there are many claims being made about the many benefits of using glucosamine sulphate that is supposed to be a joint lubricant that can do some miraculous things for you. Sciatica is a condition that is primarily characterized by pains in the lower back and gluteal region, and this is pain that usually radiates down and into the legs and even as far as the feet. This pain is most often the result of a herniated disc or overgrowth of bone in the spinal cord.

Causes of Sciatica Inflammation

When it comes to the causes of sciatic inflammation, as mentioned before, the most common of the causes of sciatica inflammation involves a herniated disc. It is important to understand here that each vertebral disc in the back is made up of a very tough outer layer of cartilage and a more elastic central area.

Now that you know this, you can understand that as you age, these disks end up degenerating and becoming much thinner and weaker over time. Especially when you are putting a lot of pressure on this area for extended periods of time, this can result in causing cracks in the outer layers of the disks, thereby allowing the central mass to squeeze out.

The bottom line is that one of the main causes of sciatica inflammation then is herniated discs in the lumber or sacral regions which put pressure on the sciatic nerve and result in causing pain and discomfort.

Treatment

Now that you are aware of the main causes of sciatic inflammation, treatment is the next step. There is the option of non surgical treatment, which most often involves prescription medication. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication is typically used and helps with mild to severe sciatic pain.

Then there is also surgery, but this is not for all patients and should only be a last resort when other methods have been tried and failed. You will have to discuss this matter with your doctor as well so that they can do a proper assessment of your condition and determine whether or not this is going to be the right choice for you.

Regardless of which particular treatment method you decide to go with, it is important to realize that when it comes to the recovery of sciatica, it is always wise to follow the instructions provided by the doctor or the physical therapist. The best thing you can do is go through with proper treatment, and then strive to eat healthy and work towards an ideal body weight.

causes of sciatica

Exploring The Causes Of Sciatica

The causes of sciatica are many and any number of them can create extreme pain for the person suffering them. The sciatic nerve runs from the base of your spine in your lower back, through your pelvis, and down your leg to your foot. Any trauma or problem that affects that nerve at any point will inevitably send pain down your leg and sometimes that pain can be crippling. The causes of sciatica usually center around the bones and muscles located in your lower back or your pelvis and you can be assured that it does not take much to create an episode of sciatica pain.

One of the most common causes of sciatica is the compression of the spine in the lower back near the L4 and the L5 region. Usually this is the result of some sort of trauma or injury to that area that causes a disc herniation. The tissue in the disc will bulge out and press up against the nerve causing a lot of pain or the nerve will get pinched by the herniated disc causing pain as well. It is not always spinal trauma that is one of the causes of sciatica. In some cases there is a deterioration of the disc that eventually causes the nerve to be exposed to the spinal column and get pinched in between the two bones. These conditions of the spine are the more common causes of sciatica and they are treated in a variety of ways from therapy to surgery.

Some Of The Other Causes

In less common cases the actual sciatic nerve itself becomes pinched at some point either in the lower back or the pelvis. This cause of sciatica is not very common but can be extremely painful and require immediate attention for relief. In some other cases the causes of sciatica are the sciatic nerve being wrapped around muscle groups within the pelvis or lower back area. When these groups contract they can cause extreme pain to the entire sciatic nerve and this form of sciatica can be very difficult to treat.

Sciatica itself is a condition that is made of a series of symptoms and ailments that combine to create serious nerve pain. It is difficult to predict exactly what will be the cause of sciatica but the best advice is if you begin to experience severe pain in your lower back or leg that you get to your doctor right away.

Calf Soreness Can Result From Sciatica

Calf Soreness Can Result From Sciatica

Sciatica pain can be felt anywhere from the lower back to the calves, creating an annoying soreness. The sciatic nerve, the longest in the body, begins in the lower back and threads down the back of each leg right to the toes of each foot. When this nerve is irritated through injury or illness, the pain can radiate over a wide area of the body. Patients with this condition may not always associate calf soreness and sciatica, but there is a definite connection.

Many Types of Sciatica Pain

Since the affected nerve is so large, and travels over a good portion of the body, it makes sense that a person may experience the pain of sciatica in different ways. Most patients report the traditional sharp pain that starts in the lower back and includes the entire leg. Numbness and tingling of the feet may also be noticed. However, calf soreness may not immediately be attributed to sciatica, which can delay the treatment. Sometimes people associate calf soreness to excessive walking or uncomfortable shoes, but sciatica should be considered as a possible cause.

Ways to Ease Calf Soreness

If the soreness in your calves is a result of sciatica, there are many ways to get relief. For immediate pain relief, ibuprofen or aspirin can help, but many sciatica pain sufferers seek a more permanent solution. Yoga exercises have been shown to slowly strengthen key muscles and therefore bring about more of a cure for sciatica pain. However, this will not happen with a few yoga sessions, and a lot depends on the severity of the sciatica condition. But with regular practice, yoga can reduce both the pain and the number of flare-ups. For calf soreness, ask your yoga instructor about specific postures and movements that will relieve sciatica pain and bring about a level of healing. Generally, this will be accomplished in three steps. The first step is to reduce the pain by relaxation techniques and removing the pressure from the sciatic nerve. Next, comes proper muscle alignment and strengthening exercises. These last two steps may take a long time to accomplish. Properly aligning the pelvis and spine may take up to six months or a year. And it will be after this step that muscle strengthening can begin. But don't be discouraged; using yoga to ease sciatica pain and the soreness of calf muscles is more of a solution than merely treating the pain with medicine. Additionally, yoga will bring an overall health benefit to your entire body, making this a terrific investment of time.

Acupuncture for Sciatica

Acupuncture for Sciatica is borrowed from Chinese Medicine
The most effective method of treatment for sciatica is acupuncture, which is a treatment that comes from Chinese medicine. At an initial stage of the pain, acupressure may be the answer, but it may not be useful for helping patients in severe pain. That is when some patients may require the stronger stimulation of acupuncture.
Sciatica pain can be aggravated by cold or damp weather and many forms of arthritis can be categorized under this type of pain. Acupuncture for Sciatica can definitely be used here, but sometimes other methods have to be combined with it like moxibustion, which is the application of heat to the acupoints or herbal drinks.
The Process
In the process of Acupuncture for Sciatica fine needles are inserted along the pathway of pain to move the Qi energy locally. The Qi is a fundamental concept of traditional Chinese culture which indicates a part of every living thing that exists and could be called the life force or the spiritual energy of each living being. Acupuncture further activates the movement of the Qi energy in order to remove the pain. The Urinary bladder meridian is used as the central point, but sometimes other points in the body are also used for treatment.
Electric Stimulation
The Electric stimulation is a recent invention which is applied to Acupuncture for Sciatica. This stimulation is used on the needles and passed through the leg, so that the body gets a greater amount of stimulation. It is often used in acupuncture clinics, but does not belong to the traditional Chinese medicine. With the help of minute pulses of electricity the local nerves get stimulated. There is no pain and the electrical shock is also painless. Due to the over-stimulation the sciatica pain that travels through those nerves are also diminished.
Ear Acupuncture
Ear Acupuncture for Sciatica is also a new method used. When the needles are removed from the ears, seeds are taped into them so that the stimulation supply to the points is on-going. Sometimes magnets are used instead of seeds, and they can be worn for a few days at a time. But utmost care should be taken to avoid any infection caused by dirt or moisture collecting at the ear seeds.
If there is acute injury or when the muscles of the back cramp are in acute back spasm syndrome, Acupuncture for Sciatica is extremely effective if it is applied quickly. If the cases are more chronic, ongoing acupuncture can also be considered. This could be supplemented with Oriental medicine made from different herbs or even exercise. Once the sciatic pain has been reduced by acupuncture, exercise can be helpful to give strength to the back and abdominal muscles.
Acupuncture for Sciatica is more effective and much less unpleasant and dangerous than surgery. Steroids or even non steroidal drugs can have several side effects, and avoiding them, pain relievers and surgery makes acupuncture worth considering.
In order to get the best results, the Acupuncture for Sciatic pain has to be individualized to the exact imbalance which the patient is undergoing. Careful examination and diagnosis is therefore necessary, before Acupuncture for Sciatica is considered. Besides, the traditional method of acupuncture reduces medical cost and suffering for the patient to a great extent.

.
